Under 12's Win the Ballajura v Goldfields 2010

Congratulations and well done to the 2010 under 12’s for bringing the Ballajura/Goldfields perpetual trophy home to Ballajura once again. Not only was 2010 a successful year on the fields but generally for both the Goldfields visit to Perth and our return to Merredin and Kalgoorlie. Now the second year that players were not billeted we are starting to iron out some of the teething problems created by the new format trips. With more meals and entertainment it has created much more work, not only for the coordinators but parents also who are relied upon to supervise on more occasions than in the past.

A big thank you to: Tony Cuzens who donates so many hours in assisting organising the trips, repairing the trailer and the bus, arranging tracksuits etc., coaching the kids and for his invaluable help on the trip away. A new face this trip was Geoff May, Geoff put his hand up to assist in driving and ended up helping out in every area of the trip away making it so much easier on Tony and myself. We are looking forward to Geoff now coming onboard for future trips away. Many thanks also to our sponsors  Laurence Scrap Metals, Bunnings, Anaconda Outdoor, This is the second 12's Goldfields trip that Laurance Scrap Metals have assisted in a huge way financially so a big thank you to Paul.  The fund raising committee girls and the parents who assisted in supervising at events and accommodations, without the combined efforts the Goldfields Competition simply couldn’t go.

Our track suit tops were delayed by the suppliers this year and very nearly didn’t make it on time. Neil Hodgeson pushed the supplier, picked them up on Thursday morning after we had left then drove them all the way to Merredin just to make sure that our boys arrived in Kalgoorlie in their full attire. That was a huge effort, many thanks Neil.

To the Goldfields crew, Nadia and Jeff Turner and all of their parents and helpers who once again turned it on for our boys and parents showing fantastic country hospitality at it’s best, many many thanks. Particularly also to Justin who invited our player out to his sheep/cattle station for a fun, typical bush afternoon which our boys will remember for many years to come.

The games this year were hard fought with many of our players lifting their skill levels when it was needed. Always to select a team for each stage of the competition is difficult when the strength of the opposition for each game is unknown, but our boys came through with determination. Best on Grounds are equally as difficult to select when so many of the players deserve recognition after playing excellent games of footy.

After the four extremely good games of footy the end result was:

  Game Result Best on ground
June Ballajura v Goldfields Ballajura def Goldfields by 1 point Sheldon Dias and Elliott Laurance
July Merredin v Ballajura Ballajura def Merredin by 38 points Brayden Weir and Jordan Gare
July Goldfields v Ballajura Game 1 Ballajura def Goldfields by 18 points Jordan White and Travis Bolin
July Goldfields v Ballajura Game 2 Goldfields def Ballajura by 10 points Jack Bodle and John Gregory
Pat Croll overall 2010 Challenge Award: Jack Bodle and Elliott Laurance

Being tied up with teams during games I was unable to take many photos so please, any photos of the trip away would be appreciated to compile a DVD for all Goldfields and Ballajura players. Please put them on disk, email me and I will arrange to pick them up.

Finally to the boys. It has been a pleasure to work with such a well behaved, well mannered and friendly group of boys. During a 5 day trip with tired kids, you would expect some problems but, apart from a couple of minor incidents dealt with on the spot and soon forgotten you all great which made it a pleasurable trip for Tony, Geoff and myself, you made us all very proud thanks guys.
